Search Console showed a false drop in clicks and impressions from August 12

A sudden fall in Search Console clicks and impressions around August 12 to 13 was a reporting error, Google confirmed. Data was fixed going forward on August 20.

What happened

Search Console performance reports showed a sharp drop in clicks and impressions from around August 12 to 13. Google's John Mueller confirmed it was a logging issue and not a real change in visibility.

Why it matters

Anyone reviewing August results could mistake the dip for a penalty or for damage from the spam update. It was neither. Your actual traffic was not affected.

What to do

  • Do not act on Search Console data for August 12 to 20 in isolation
  • Cross-check that period against Google Analytics and your call records
  • Add a note to your August report explaining the gap
  • Compare whole months when you judge the spam update

The details

According to Search Engine Roundtable, the issue affected the Search performance report, the Discover report and the newer generative AI reports. Mueller said on Bluesky that Google was aware and working on it, and described it as a logging issue. Reporting was corrected going forward on August 20, and the missing data was noted as restored by August 31.

Our read

Reporting bugs like this happen a few times a year, and the timing here was unlucky because it overlapped with ranking volatility and the spam update. The lesson is to never diagnose a traffic problem from one tool. Calls, form submissions and analytics sessions tell you whether customers actually stopped arriving. In this case they had not.
