Local AI Overviews seen quoting self-promotional “best of” lists

Local search expert Joy Hawkins showed Google's AI Overview for a law firm search drawing every recommendation from one lawyer's own listicle. Here is why that matters.

What happened

Joy Hawkins of Sterling Sky shared an example where Google's AI Overview for a local law firm search took its descriptions of every firm from a single lawyer's self-promoting “best of” article, and linked to that article instead of the firms' own sites.

Why it matters

If AI answers rely on list articles, whoever publishes the list controls how your business is described. A competitor can rank themselves first and summarize you in a sentence.

What to do

  • Search “best [your service] in [your city]” and read the AI answer
  • Note which list pages are cited and whether you appear on them
  • Ask to be added to the legitimate local lists and directories
  • Publish a clear, factual page about your own services and area

The details

The example was posted on X and covered by Search Engine Roundtable on August 12. The report does not include a response from Google, so treat this as an observed behavior and not a confirmed or permanent one.

The background

AI Overviews assemble answers from pages Google already trusts enough to rank. For “best” searches, list articles match the wording of the query well, which helps explain why they get picked up even when the author has an obvious interest.

Our read

We would not advise writing a list that ranks yourself first. Google's spam systems have targeted that kind of content before, and it reads badly to customers. The durable fix is coverage on independent sources: local press, trade associations, genuine review platforms and real directories. When several credible pages describe your business the same way, a single self-serving list has far less influence on the answer.
