Google AI Overviews now open in full for some searches, without a Show more button

Google is testing AI Overviews that expand to the full answer by default, with a follow-up box loaded underneath. Ordinary results sit lower on the page as a result.

What happened

For some searches, Google's AI Overviews now expand to the full response on their own, the Show more button is gone, and an “Ask anything” follow-up box loads beneath. Google confirmed the behavior to Search Engine Roundtable.

Why it matters

A taller AI answer pushes normal results further down the page and steers people toward AI Mode. Fewer searchers will reach the classic blue links, so being one of the sources cited in the answer matters more.

What to do

  • Search your main services and note which sites the AI answer cites
  • Make sure your key pages answer the question directly in the first paragraph
  • Keep your Business Profile complete, since local answers draw on it
  • Watch clicks in Search Console, not only average position

The details

The change was first spotted by SEO consultant Chris Long and reported on August 28. A Google spokesperson said AI Overviews may expand dynamically for topics where its systems judge it most useful, and that its research shows people find this more helpful. Google's Robby Stein added that the expansion does not trigger if the user has already started scrolling. Google describes it as applying to some queries, not as a full rollout.

Our read

This continues a clear direction. Google is moving more searches into an AI answer with follow-up questions, and the space for ordinary listings is shrinking. For local services the map pack still appears for searches with buying intent, which is why we keep treating the Business Profile as the main asset. For informational searches, the practical goal is to be cited. Pages that state the answer plainly, show who wrote them, and are backed by independent mentions are the ones we see quoted.
